Mark’s Compost Tea Recipe

Compost tea acts like a dilute form of fertilizer that can be sprayed onto leaves or used as a soil drench. For a detailed discussion on the safe use of compost tea check out this free extension webinar Making and Using Compost Teas

Things you’ll need:

5 gallon bucket
plastic mixing tub
air bubbler
2 “D” cell batteries for bubbler
measuring cup
stir stick
1/3 cup horticultural molasses
1/4 cup liquid seaweed
1 cup well decomposed compost
5 gallons rain water or de-gassed tap water

Add rain water to the 5 gallon bucket, using the mixing tub from the shed to measure out and transfer to the bucket. It is recommended that only 2.5 gallons be transferred at a time due to the weight of the water. Ensure the bucket is in a shady location prior to adding the water to avoid having to move the full container. Look for the measuring marks on the inside of the mixing tub.

Add the compost, molasses and liquid seaweed to the water in the bucket and stir well to blend. Attach the air bubbler to the side of the bucket and put the hose into the bucket so that the weighted end is at the bottom. Turn on the bubbler and aerate the moisture for at least 24 hours. If conditions are right a frothy foam will appear on the top of the water. This is a sign of successful aerobic bacterial activity. The compost tea is ready to be used as a soil inoculate or foliar spray. Use within 24 hours of making.
