Compost. This is How We Do It

Healthy plants need healthy soil. The regular addition of compost will transform even the worst soil into a plant paradise where roots can stretch out and get comfy. Compost also fosters an underground network of beneficial micro-organisms that will help your plants fend off disease and insect pests.

At PPCG we create our own compost and we need your help.

The more materials we gather, the more compost we can make.

  1. Donate vegetable and fruit scraps from your kitchen. If you can, cut scraps into small pieces and freeze them before bringing to the garden. Please put these offerings into the green receiving bin we are building this week rather than the active compost bin.
  2. Collect coffee grounds from your favourite cafe.
  3. Haul in a bag or two of leaves or grass clippings. Please make sure they aren’t contaminated with herbicide.

Volunteer some muscle power. Active compost is like a mini world of organisms. Those creatures need water and air to survive.

When the compost is ready for garden use we will have a workday to share the wealth.

How Do I Use It?

Incorporate it into the top few inches of your soil at planting time or whenever it is available.

If your supply is limited you might consider making compost tea. Check out Martha Stewart’s recipe here. She knows a good thing when she sees it.

Always apply compost tea after a rain or to a well watered plot early in the morning or at evening time as our sun (sometimes referred to as The Death Star here in Austin) can kill the microbes pretty quickly.
